Every year, Home Instead Senior Care hosts the Be a Santa to a Senior program. This program helps spread holiday cheer to lonely or financially-challenged seniors. The program has attracted upwards of 60,000 volunteers over the past six years distributing gift to deserving seniors. Since introducing Be a Santa to a Senior, Home Instead Senior Care has helped provide around 1.2 million gifts to more than 700,000 seniors.
Home Instead Senior Care partners with local non-profit and community organizations to identify seniors who might not otherwise receive gifts this holiday season. The company then works with local businesses and retail stores to help facilitate the purchase and distribution of gifts by placing trees and ornaments within their various locations. Each senior’s gift requests are written on a Be a Santa to a Senior tree ornament.
Then our community bands together each year and makes Christmas possible for our seniors! Various community groups as well as individuals pick up the ornaments from different tree locations, although our main location at Turtle Creek Mall has remained the same, and purchase the gift requests. For several weeks, gifts come pouring in to our office as well as extras for those seniors whose ornaments may not get selected or brought back.
After all gifts are returned, we host a wrapping party for any volunteers and all the community groups we partnered with that year for Be a Santa to a Senior. This is a very fun event. We turn our office into Santa’s workshop and all our volunteer elves get busy wrapping presents. At times we have had anywhere between 500-1200 gifts to wrap! Then we send the gifts with our community partners who distribute the gifts to the seniors in need.
We love this program and we love hosting it each year! Most of our staff members and CAREGivers say this program helps really put them in the Christmas spirit because this is what christmas is all about… giving. Just as God sent his one and only son to us as a gift to save the world, we are all called to give and serve others as well. We have seen the difference made in the senior’s lives when they receive the basic essentials that most of us take for granted. The gift requests are so humbling as some ask for toiletries, socks, blankets, hats, scarves, cleaning supplies, snacks and/or can food items. These supplies can last each of them a long time.
This program also gives some seniors the opportunity to not only receive a gift but to also fellowship with others. Some seniors on the program do not have any family and may live alone. A visit from our community partners with a special gift, is the only Christmas they may receive the whole season. Home Instead Senior Care is extremely proud to be a part of this effort and would like to thank each of you that buy, give and donate around Christmas but also throughout the whole year. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and have a Merry Christmas!
